Friday 8th Oct – Cruise Day 7 – Portland, Maine

Up at 06:30 this morning to catch the sunrise over the Portland area.  The sea had been really rough the night before for the first time on the cruise but by this morning it was as calm as the Med!
Docked on time and were scheduled to go through US customs on board at 10am prior to our excursion to Portland and Kennebunkport which was due to leave at 10:50.  I’ve never seen such disorganisation in the queues and so many tempers getting frayed.  Still we managed to clear it soon after 11am and our coach was still waiting for us.

Yet another excellent tour guide (Frank) who was in his mid 60s and was a “Mainer” as opposed to a “Mainiac”, he made the 6 hour tour fun.  We started off by driving round the important parts of Portland which is now mainly Victorian and newer as it’s been burnt down at least 3 times since it was first named Falmouth.  The English destroyed it after one of the independence battles as Falmouth had been on the Boston side.

Then it was off to the lighthouse (or Headlight as they call it) in Fort Williams.  I have to ask why most of their lighthouses are built many yards inland from the rocky areas.  Any ideas?  Still here's a picture of the picturesque lighthouse with the "workhorse" lighthouse in the background.

And here are the loving couple doing the beautiful circular walk (still talking to each other after almost 5 weeks)
Then we were off to Kennebunkport which is a pretty Maine fishing village (aka Torist Trap) where President George HW Bush (senior) has had his summer house for 60 odd years.  It's also famous for the Wedding Cake House.  Had a nice lunch of lobster, clam chowder and haddock for Jean - a snip at $100!
Here are some pictures.................

This is George's pad.

Back to the ship in time for a lovely sunset.

Then a bit of excitement where the pilot left our ship right under our cabin...

Land at Boston tomorrow where we'll pick up a car and drive to Provincetown at the tip of Cape Cod and then back down to Sandwich.

  1. It was the Wedding Cake House when we were there. I think that you've lost track of time or you need a new guide/guide book!

I guess that the lighthouses are on shore because it's the light that matter - not the building! Much more accessable by foot than would be by boat when built off shore. There are some great little ones all along that coast.

    Enjoy! ...Pete
